Getting there

Driving down

Two cars from Utrecht, roughly eleven hours with stops. We do the big shop in Moûtiers

at the bottom of the climb — half the price of the village.

Snow chains

Winter tyres or chains are compulsory on the access road. The last 35 km from Moûtiers climbs steadily through hairpins.

Parking

Where to park

Val Thorens is a semi-pedestrian resort, so street parking is very limited in winter and parking in the resort’s car parks is compulsory. There are several covered and open car parks, with prices starting at around €18 per night. Parking spaces can be booked online in advance, and it’s a good idea to do this well ahead of time as availability is limited.

Food

Meals for the week

Five nights we cook in the apartment, one night we eat out in the village. Groceries come from Moûtiers on the way up, so tell me before Saturday if you do not eat something. Two people cook, two people clean, and the rota goes on the fridge on day one. Lunch on the mountain is your own, reckon on €20–25 a day.

Mountain lunch

A burger and a beer on the piste comes to about €25. Keep a bar in your jacket if you would rather ski through the middle of the day.

Good to know

Questions?

Do I need special insurance?

Travel insurance with winter sports cover is recommended. This can cover things like accidents on the slopes, medical expenses and mountain rescue. For off-piste skiing, check that it’s included in the policy.

Can I rent skis there?

Yes, there are plenty of ski and snowboard rental shops in Val Thorens. Skis, boots, poles and helmets can all be rented, and equipment can usually be booked in advance.

How much cash should I bring?

Not much. Cards are accepted almost everywhere in Val Thorens. Around €50 to €100 in cash should be more than enough for small purchases or places that don’t accept cards.

What if there is no snow?

Val Thorens is one of the highest ski resorts in Europe, with the village at around 2,300 metres. This means it generally has very reliable snow conditions, especially compared with lower-altitude resorts. There is also extensive snowmaking. There’s never a guarantee of perfect conditions, but the chances of having no skiable snow are very low.
